Melanie & Cody birth

I was so honored when Melanie contacted me and was interested in doing a birthing shoot, as you already know, these are some of my most favorite shoots EVER!  I spent an evening at their house, getting to know them and just going over what to expect from me during her laboring and birth process.

Melanie was induced and they started off with the gel.  Her labor started, and then stopped.  I originally planned on going up a bit later, because I know that with inductions labor can be a long one.  She had mentioned when we were talking at her house that it was important to have photos documented of her with her daughter.  When I found out she was up there that morning, I packed up my stuff and headed on up.   For me, I would rather go early than later, because there are so many moments and things that happen up to the intense laboring and birth. I really want to be a part of the entire laboring experience from beginning to end, 16 hours later. :).

After about an hour she headed out the door with Grandma to go get lunch.  We spent the afternoon, talking, well more like laughing and walking the halls.   I've never laughed and talked so much during a birthing session. It was wonderful and hilarious. I took some detail shots, and ended up grabbing lunch with one of her friends, who was there for support and to help her with oils and her diffuser.

Labor was progressing pretty slow, so they broke her water and started the Pitocin. Lots of ice chips, and foot massages, and dreams of eating cheeseburgers.  She settled with broth and popsicles.

The sun started to set, so I was super excited to play around with all of the shadow in the room.

Another friend of hers came up around 9ish.  Labor was really starting to pick up and became intense.  We went down to the cafeteria to grab dinner and to let her rest.

After about 2 hours of pushing, Melanie said, "I just need a little help."  She did so wonderful and labored for hours.  They did a suction and she came right out. <3

Melanie and Cody, thank you so much for welcoming me into your home, and to allowing me to be apart of such a beautiful moment.  Thank you a ton for all of the laughs and your sweet and thoughtful gift.  You were so wonderful to work with. I can't wait to edit this sweet girl's newborn session. <3
